Podiatry Service – South East and South West Essex

Our podiatry team are here to support patients with moderate to high-risk foot health needs linked to conditions such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis treated with biologic medications, and other conditions requiring immunosuppressive therapy, where podiatry treatment is clinically required.

Summary

The South East and South West Essex Podiatry Service provides treatment to patients who live and are registered with a GP in the areas of Basildon, Rochford, Thurrock, Canvey, Southend and Rayleigh.

Service information

We offer a Podiatry Service to individuals who have a medical condition that places their foot health at high risk and who also have a foot problem that can be treated by the Podiatry Service.  For example ulceration, corns or callous.

Conditions that have an impact on foot health include:

  1. Active or past foot ulceration and/or amputation.
  2. Moderate to High Diabetes at risk foot status.
  3. Patients diagnosed with inflammatory arthritis on DMARDS or Biologic Drugs.  
  4. Patients with diagnosed circulatory conditions of the feet/lower limbs.  
  5. Immunosuppressed patients.

Please note we do not provide a toenail cutting service, or treatment for verrucae or fungal skin/nails.

The service is available to people over 12 years of age who can attend clinic and are suffering from mechanical pain or disability whilst walking or standing.   
Biomechanics is the assessment of the movement and function of the joints, tendons and muscles of the legs and feet and how they work with each other.  If a biomechanical problem is found, we can assess and if appropriate, provide treatment and advice including orthotic devices to go into he shoes to help alleviate pain or dysfunction by improving foot posture and function.

We are unable to treat:  toe deformity, corns or callous on toes, Morton’s neuroma, ganglions or fibroma.

Please note: We do not issue footwear, your General Practitioner/ Family Doctor would need to refer you to the Orthotist for that service.

We only offer an ingrowing toenail correction surgery to individuals over the age of 12.  All surgery is undertaken under a local anaesthetic toe injection in the community clinic.  Surgery will only be offered where the nail is piercing the flesh, causing bleeding and a current or history of infection and swelling. Since 2022 we no longer perform nail surgery on painful, curved nails (involuted nails) or thickened painful nails.  A photo is required where possible to be attached to the referral. 

Please note:  If you are under the age of 12, or you cannot tolerate the procedure under local anaesthesia your General Practitioner/Family Doctor will need to refer you to orthopaedics. 

For painful curved nails or thickened painful nails you will need to seek private treatment.

We also accept referrals from GPs and other health professionals. Once completed, the form can be submitted using our online Microsoft Forms link, be sent by post, or submitted by a clinician through SystmOne.
