On 19 December 2023, The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released new guidelines for patients with type 1 diabetes, regarding the use of hybrid closed loop technology. This is sometimes also referred to as ‘HCL’ or ‘artificial pancreas’.
Hybrid closed loop systems will help patients by delivering insulin automatically in response to continuously monitored glucose levels.
The NHS has been given a target of five years to fully implement the recommendations in the NICE guidelines, starting from 1 April 2024.
During this time, we will be working together with colleagues in the Mid and South Essex (MSE) Integrated Care System to identify patients with the greatest clinical need who meet the criteria stipulated in the guidelines.
NHS England’s National Implementation Strategy recommends that those with the greatest clinical need should be provided with this technology first.
