One of our education departments for young people receiving care for their mental health has been rated Outstanding by Ofsted.
The St Aubyn Centre Therapeutic Education Department is based within the St Aubyn Centre Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit in Colchester.
The St Aubyn Centre looks after teenagers aged 13 to 18, who all attend classes at the education department while under our care. They also remain enrolled at their usual community school.
An Ofsted inspection team visited the education department in October and published its report this week, Monday 5 December.
They highlighted how staff know pupils’ special educational needs and/or disabilities “exceptionally well” and support pupils “to be hopeful and aspire for a better future for themselves”
The curriculum was described as exceptional and ambitious, and the inspectors said many pupils were successful, despite the complex barriers and adversity they face.
Their report added: “St Aubyn Centre Education Department is a sanctuary for pupils who are experiencing difficult times.
“Staff work effectively to break down the barriers to learning that pupils face in their daily lives.
“Adults carefully craft learning experiences around what works best for individual pupils.
“Staff take great care and attention to understand pupils’ significant needs and backgrounds.”
The education team work closely with the medical team and other professionals, and the curriculum is complemented by the well-being and emotional support therapies that young people receive at the St Aubyn Centre.
Executive headteacher Simon Turnnidge, said: “This ‘outstanding’ Ofsted judgement is a public endorsement of the hard work, energy, commitment and team spirit of the students, teachers, support staff, governors, parents, carers and medical team.
“We are incredibly pleased that the inspectors, after spending two days with us, captured the very essence of our school and we could not be prouder.
“I’m privileged to lead a team of incredible people, who work selflessly and tirelessly with young people, their families and professional support networks.”
