Eating disorder studies

Summary

​To set up a re-contactable, world-first comprehensive resource on Eating Disorders (EDs) to facilitate investigation into the associated risk factors, with biological samples for studying the genetics, psychological & medical data – inc. neuropsychological, psychiatric conditions and medical comorbidities – and data on family psychiatric medical history. Provide a resource of clinical measured linked to biological samples as part of the NIHR BioResource and the NIHR BioResource Centre Maudsley, enabling ED studies by providing samples and biological data to the scientific community at minimal costs, from participants who have provided saliva samples, and some additional psychiatric and medical health information; obtaining consent for re-contacting and link research data to medical records.

Inclusion criteria

​1. Participants referred to an eating disorder-specific NHS service aged 16+.

2. Participants who have a lifetime occurrence of anorexia nervosa, bulimia, nervosa, binge-eating disorder, or any other eating disorder defined in DSM-5.

3. Participants who have been diagnosed and/or treated for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge-eating disorder or any other eating disorder defined in DSM-5.

4. Participants with a probably and undiagnosed eating disorder identified through a screening questionnaire.

5. Participants who have not stated their refusal to take part in future research.

6. Participants who are willing to donate a biological sample for genetic analysis.​​

Exclusion criteria

​1. Individuals without capacity to provide informed consent.

2. Individuals under the age of 1​6.

3. Individuals who do not have a current diagnosis or who do not meet the screening criteria for DSM-5 eating disorders.
