Our Specialist Wound Care Team is dedicated to providing holistic and evidence-based care, ensuring high standards of practice throughout West Essex. We offer specialist advice and support to healthcare professionals across the region, working together to prevent and manage acute and chronic wounds, particularly those that are hard to heal, complex, or problematic.
Together with primary and community care teams, we provide direct care focused on prevention and specialist treatment. We also offer comprehensive support, resources, and education to service users, carers, and health and social care practitioners. Our goal is to advocate for prevention, effective treatment, and enhanced self-management. We strive to deliver proactive, integrated, and personalised care within the community

What to expect at your appointment
During your appointment, a specialist tissue viability nurse or leg ulcer specialist nurse will conduct a comprehensive assessment. This will involve discussing your medical history, examining the wound, and performing additional tests if necessary, such as a Doppler ultrasound. Based on this assessment, a personalized care plan will be created in collaboration with you. This care plan will then be shared with your regular nursing team to ensure continuity of care.
How the service is provided
- Telephone advice
- Joint visits with your regular clinician at home, in a care home, or at the GP practice
- Appointments at our specialised leg ulcer clinics
- Remote consultations and advice for other healthcare professionals to enhance the care provided
Areas we support
The Tissue Viability Nurses (TVN) support the Epping, Harlow, and Uttlesford areas.
The Leg Ulcer Nurses (LUNs) run clinics at five sites, Saffron Walden, Dunmow, Harlow, Epping, and Waltham Abbey.
Locations
Our service operates on weekdays from 9am to 5pm, excluding bank holidays.
Referral information
To access our service, please request a referral from your GP, Practice Nurses, Hospitals, or other Community Health Services. The service is available to all patients registered with a GP in West Essex.
Eligibility criteria for referral to the service:
- Over 18 years old.
- Ambulatory for leg ulcer clinics.
